In an era of rapid, broad-based digitization, IT must adopt new engagement activities to provide guidance, expertise and frameworks to technology projects whenever it is required. Traditional approaches to developing IT talent are not enough, as they focus on building technical skills and improving business process knowledge.

We have identified a set of 12 competencies that define high performance for IT staff. We define competencies as a mix of skills, knowledge and abilities to deliver a desired objective. Our IT competency framework is based on research of more than 2,000 IT professionals across 75 organizations. The competency model highlights that to succeed, IT employees need to be proficient at a mix of competencies that focus on collaboration with multiple stakeholders, balance between judgment and analysis, and the ability to adapt to new conditions and constant change.
